When most of us go to Kroger or Meijer, we want to get in and get out, right? We use the self-scanner and do the job of a cashier to check out. Actor Sam Neil, of Jurassic Park fame, recently went viral with the video below, claiming he does NOT use the self scanners because he doesn’t want to take away a job from someone. Sam’s not the first person to point this out. Back in the day when I was in high school, I bagged groceries at Kroger in Kokomo, IN. On any given day there were at least 5 cashiers, and on the weekend probably 8 or 9 working their registers. Not today. You might find one or two humans working the register and 6 to 10 self check out scanners available. Companies want to save money, that’s why they rely on the self scanning machines. I’ll admit, I use them too most of the time. But Sam has a point: by going to the lane where a human cashier is working, you’re refusing to give in to what corporate America thinks is best…for THEM and their bottom line.
